Shiatsu, like Acupuncture works on the body's vital energy (known as 'Ki' or 'Chi'), and by harmonising this energy promotes better health and strengthens the body's own self healing abilities. Shiatsu Therapy, is a healing art which draws its theory and techniques from both traditional Oriental Medicine and from Western massage practice.
Shiatsu helps to relax the muscles, tone up the circulatory and lymphatic systems, improve suppleness and flexibility in the joints, and assists the functioning of the internal organs.
Shiatsu has a deeply relaxing effect on the body, calms the mind and produces an overall feeling of well being. Shiatsu may be used in conjunction with orthodox medical treatment or other alternative therapies.
The techniques of Shiatsu involve stretching and pressure. The pressure is focused on Acupuncture points on the meridians. Meridians are the energy pathways which carry Ki to the internal organs and throughout the body. Pressure may range from very gentle palm healing to deep stimulation with thumbs and fingers and sometimes elbows, knees and feet.
Shiatsu has been found to be effective in the treatment of common ailments such as headaches, back and neck pain, digestive and menstrual disorders and stress related problems. It can also be used as a preventative treatment, to monitor and regulate a person's overall health, and in addition has been found to benefit more serious conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Depression, and Arthritis. Being a holistic therapy, Shiatsu looks at the individual from physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual points of view, and advice on posture, exercise, diet, self expression and pace of living are included in both classes and treatments.
